My name’s Andy Baker – Hove is a long standing nickname from school.  I’m now a middle-aged Dad trying to achieve what I did as a teenager.  Back then I built a turtle controlled by a BBC Micro via a very long piece of ribbon cable.  All I have left to show of that is a photocopy of an article in Everyday Electronics, and a couple of aluminium wheels.

Now, 25 years on, the Raspberry Pi offered the opportunity to do this again, but better.  This blog starts with the building of another turtle.  It then moves on to cover the building of my quadcopters – a process which is still in progress despite having spent over four years already.  It’s been interesting, challenging, and often very frustrating, but while the net progress is positive, I’m going to keep on going.

I’m one of the founders of the Cheltenham based Cotswold Jam, a volunteer-run event, promoting kids’ education in ICT / STEM in an interactive and fun way.  Details of the next event are available here.  Tickets are free, and open to all, with a bias towards kids.

  2. Hey, I am planning on integrating a PI with my quad. Your documentation is really good. I am going to try much of what you have already done. Have you decided to add a magnetometer (compass) and GPS yet. What about a barometer for accurate altitude control?

    I sent you a separate email about what I am planning on doing. However, I have to get the PWM outputs working first. I am a new linuix programmer.

    • I’ll be adding barometer, magnetometer and GPS once I’ve got the accelerometer / gyro combination working well. Until then, there’s no point! I’m also waiting for a specific IMU board to be released so that all sensors (except the GPS) are on one tiny board – space it really tight on my setup.
