Linux notesbook

This is my notepad is for useful Linux commands for setting up my RPi.

Linux commands

  • sudo rpi-update – update firmware / OS to latest version of Wheezy without reflashing
  • sudo apt-get update – update the software cache
  • sudo apt-cache search ???? – search for software related to ????
  • sudo apt-get install | remove ???? (as found above)
  • sudo apt-get upgrade – upgrade all installed software
  • sudo raspi-config – update the boot app used for configuring SD card split/GPU memory etc
  • /boot/config.txt – the hard way to do what raspi-config does!
  • ifconfig / ifup / ifdown – how to configure / review WiFi / ethernet
  • top – CLI command showing running tasks and memory usage
  • sudo shutdown -P -h now – shutdown prior to power off
  • sudo reboot – reboot, for example after installing new kernel
  • sudo halt – safe shutdown
  • dpkg –get-selections | grep -i GPIO – how to find out whether you have a specific package installed
  • tar cvz file_or_dir_name > zip_file_name.tgz
  • tar xvf zip_file_name.tgz
  • installing / enabling I2C
  • installing / using RPIO
  • setting up boot-time daemons
  • WAP + Realtec WiFi dongle bridge to internet
  • Alt + PrntScn + reisub – kernel safe reboot even if (especially if) user space locked
  • Update absolutely everything to the latest for wheezy
  • Capturing a screen snapshot
  • lsb_release -a to check jessie or wheezy
  • /opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp to check CPU temperature
